You either had to be embarking on a digital detox or living under a rock to be unaware of the Victoria Beckham X Reebok launch last week. The social media storm of excitement flooded all channels from fans, influencers, and VB herself who posted loads to Instagram and even hit up a traditional morning news station to promote the collaboration. It wasn’t hard to guess that she was going to be what Stella McCartney is to Adidas, after she posted she was at Reebok HQ months ago, then made that limited addition t-shirt with Shaquile O’Neil, that probably didn’t make sense to most people at the time. Adidas also owns Reebok, and David Beckham has been married to Adidas for light years. But tightly knit lucrative relationships aside, the collaboration is a telling one.
Fashion forward empowering clothing is not just for life and work, but for the gym too. When we look good we feel good. That is not a new notion but one that now has athletic brands opting for an even more fashion and lifestyle approach to their designs. Technical fabrics must now be pollenated with on trend elements that make them work seamlessly with our non workout wardrobes So yes, we do need confidence boosting on all fronts, right down to our pajamas. There wouldn’t be a billion dollar fashion industry without our untethered human emotions, and a love of self expression.
Since I was knee deep in FOMO for the VB X Reebok collaboration, missing out on both the party and the looks, I decided to check out the current offering of Reebok athletic and ath-leisure wear. To be honest it had been quite a while since I bought a set of anything match-y match-y. but my gut was telling me to try a full put together look. I stuck to my plan and found a set, thinking by osmosis my new Reebok cropped racer back top and high waisted leggings would turn me into the recent VB Instagram post. That would take more than osmosis but alas the fresh set, and new trainers made me feel like I had super powers. Just like a new dress and bananas cool heels, I felt that empowering feeling you get when what you are wearing gives you wings. I pretty much went to the gym right away, even trying out the famous Kardashian pose where you lean back on one hip, and point the opposite leg and toe, while wearing a running shoe. Elongating the legs but making absolutely no sense at the same time. Or the fact that you are taking a selfie in the gym. However that is the magic, you feel quite amazing in your new put together gym look , and it makes you do silly things like take pictures and want to actually work out!
So I wore my new look 3x, hoping the gym didn’t think I only had one outfit. Which is ridiculous because I have boxes of things I never wear. Things I am now going to put together into full gym looks, and hope they continue to give me the sartorial super powers I need and want in my life. Though going to the gym and wanting to go might require further positive reinforcements, I am shopping for a few more things to keep my inner Sporty Spice in check.
